How to mark long vowels

nêhiyawêwin marks long vowels using a circumflex (ê â î ô) or a macron (ē ā ī ō). This can be tricky to figure out depending on the system you are using and the program you are using. Sometimes updates to software can disable options to add accents.

If you are using Apple products to access this course, simply holding a vowel key down for a moment will allow a pop-up window to appear that allows you to select the correct accent mark.

For PCs, it can sometimes be necessary to install a French keyboard that you can switch to when writing in nêhiyawêwin. Another option is to look up help articles about how to access keyboard shortcuts.

When all else fails, your exercises will include long vowels for you to copy and paste as needed.

Are the videos closed captioned?

All of the videos are machine closed captioned, which means that especially when it comes to deciphering nêhiyawêwin terms, the closed captions are quite inaccurate. I have manually captioned the first couple of videos, and my goal is to have all videos on this site accurately closed captioned eventually. This will be a focus for the next round of development.
